Provide an easy way to apply tension to the wire rope line. They may be installed in both temporary and permanent applications.
Turnbuckles are often used in temporary installations, commonly both horizontally to cordon off an area and vertically for tie-down purposes. They are used for tie-down or in horizontal applications can usually be connected to the wire rope with wire rope clips. Using wire rope clips in conjunction with an appropriately-sized turnbuckle offers a quick and efficient field installation for many jobs, but installing turnbuckles with wire rope clips in the field should only be considered for temporary installations.
They are used for overhead lifting and in permanent installations must meet the requirements set forth in ASME B30.26 for “Rigging Hardware”. Turnbuckles installed in overhead lifting applications can be very useful in equalizing an uneven load to lift evenly. When a turnbuckle is installed permanently or used for lifting, it should either be built into the lifting sling with a swaged eye or connected with a shackle. Installers should reference the turnbuckle’s Working Load Limit (WLL) when choosing one for overhead lifting applications.
Turnbuckles come in a wide assortment of sizes, capacities, and configurations. Each end of a turnbuckle can have its own unique design; the most common terminations are hooks, clevises and eyes. Each end of a turnbuckle has different threads, either left- or right-handed, so they cannot be moved from one end to the other.
